Carter Street

MA+KE Principal Sloane Mayor’s own home showcases the twin powers of design and building science to transform a tired 50’s cape into a modern, energy efficient building.

The project's carbon load was carefully considered in both the selection of insulating materials and by the considerable effort it took to improve and  re-use the existing foundation under the new two-story center section.  Non-toxic cellulose and mineral wool were used on the exterior walls, in both the new and old buildings! This is akin to wrapping the house in it’s own wool sweater. And of course, all windows were replaced with triple-glazed passive house versions.

This new space encompasses a fully renovated kitchen, a family room, and a new master suite that has stunning views of the Appalachian Trail. The finishing touches came with the addition of a three season porch—a perfect gathering spot for friends and family.
